Chapter Sixteen

“Tammy!”

Light blazed from the ceiling fan light in the guest room.

Relief hit her as she recognized the man standing in the doorway, his weapon held in front of him. Semi-crouched, Hawthorne scanned the room.

“What’s wrong? Are you all right?” he asked, his frown fierce as he straightened.

Trembling, she nodded. “Nightmare.”

He strode across the room and laid his weapon on the bedside table. Settling on the edge of the bed, he assessed her with a worried gaze. Clad in a denim shirt and jeans, his hair rumpled, he looked as if he’d slept in his clothes.

Lightning brightened the room, and the lamp overhead flickered. Thunder growled.

She jammed her hands through her hair. “I’m sorry I woke you.”

“I fell asleep on the couch. That scream scared the hell out of me.”

Another tremor shuddered through her body. “I’m sorry. I’m fine now.”

“Tell me about it.”

Tammy shook her head. “It’s ridiculous.”

He reached out, touched her face. She realized tears dampened her cheeks, and a burning sensation assaulted her throat.

“Come on.” He swept his thumbs across her cheeks to remove the tears. “You’ll feel better if you tell me.”

“I need a cup of tea or something to calm me down.” Tammy realized her stalling tactics wouldn’t last long with this man.

He stood, and as she climbed from bed, Tammy remembered that she wore a spaghetti strap tank and matching tap pants. His gaze slid down to the tank top. Settling on her breasts, his gaze traced the rounded fullness with unmistakable interest.

“Hawthorne,” she said softly, half reprimanding, half amused. “What the hell are you doing?”

He winked and then perused the tap pants and her bare legs. “Okay, you caught me. You look hot in those tiny scraps, Carter.”

Aroused and amused by the compliment, she made a scoffing noise and headed for the door. “Tiny scraps, my ass.”

She thought she heard a stifled choking sound coming from behind her, but ignored it.

Tammy settled on a glass of water, deciding the caffeine in tea would keep her awake. She knew, though, that recalling the dream would do far more to keep her wideeyed.

They went into the living room, sinking onto the couch. As she sipped the icy water, he remained quiet.

“You don’t have to stay up with me. You must be tired,” she said.

Hawthorne slipped his hand behind her neck and kneaded tight muscles. “Tell me about the dream.”

Startled by the intimate touch, she almost spilled her water. She didn’t protest, though. His touch created pleasant stirrings of excitement.

How could she confess the dream without explaining the visions? “I dreamt about my sister, Barb.”

Lines formed between his brows and his mouth dropped into a frown. He nodded, keeping up the stroking rhythm of his fingers.

She’d struggled for years not to discuss her sister in any way. Giving in to his request hurt like a tooth extraction. “Barb was older than me by a few years. She’d be thirty-five now.”

After swallowing more sips of water, she put the tumbler on a coaster and turned toward Hawthorne, effectively removing his touch.
